JRFlyers Have Big Weekend Against the Revolution

After a tough Showcase in New Hampshire the JRFlyers were looking to get back on track with a home and home series with division rivals the Philadelphia Revolution.

Saturday

Play was pretty balanced for the most part in the 1st period and there wasn’t a goal till late. The JRFlyers worked the puck down low behind the Revolution net. Dougherty was fighting off some pressure, when he found Kubara open in front and he shot it past (G)Cosentino for the 1-0 lead. In the 2nd period the Revolution were able to even the score as the JRFlyers couldn’t clear the puck and a long shift resulted in the Revolution beating (G) Murch to tie the game 1-1. A few minutes later the JRFlyers were headed to the power play. They cashed in on a beautiful play starting with Kubara sending a pass to Dougherty and from there he found a wide open Matt Manning back door and he tapped it into the net for the 2-1 lead. Not long after that goal the JRFlyers again kept up the pressure and had the puck deep in Revolution territory. Dougherty sent the puck to Kubara in the slot, his pass was tipped but Manning fought in front and with a quick turnaround shot scored his second of the night and it put the JRFlyers up 3-1. With less than a minute left in the period, the Revolution had an offensive zone draw. Dougherty won the draw and it went behind the net. Tyler Williams retrieved it and sent the home run pass all the way to Manning at the Revolution blue line. Manning was all alone on a breakaway and again beat Cosentino for a hat trick and a 4-1 lead. In the 3rd period near the midway point the Revolution had the JRFlyers pinned deep in their zone. The puck came out to the point and was fired through traffic to net the second goal for the Revolution making it 4-2. The JRFlyers were able to take back the momentum on the power play just a few minutes later. Dougherty had it along the wall and went back to the point to Hinderliter. He took a few steps in then fired the puck cross ice back door to, you guessed, Matt Manning who notched his fourth goal of the game and the JRFlyers had a 5-2 lead. The Revolution wouldn’t go quietly as they put up another tally but it was too much of a deficit for them to come back and the JRFlyers won 5-3.

The top line in that game was phenomenal, and pretty much unstoppable. Captain Tommy Dougherty had an assist on every goal and here’s what he said about his line mate Matt Manning after his big night: “It was awesome to see him score four goals! It’s not often you see someone score four goals in one game in this league. Every goal he was working hard and in the right place at the right time. One thing he does is shoot low which is great to see because it generates rebounds and has a good chance to reach the back of the net.”

Manning had an incredible night, and he is also the new comer to this team. This was just his second weekend with the team and he is off to a good start, and he talked about the game and his time here so far. ”It wasn’t just me by any means. It was Doc and Casey (Kubara) as well .We just played well together and were connecting on all of our passes. I had to be in the right spot at the right time and I was, but I was getting some great passes from my team.”

“Everyone has welcomed me to the locker room and been real nice. It’s been a good experience on and off the ice and I have nothing to complain about.” Matt Manning

Sunday

The start of this game didn’t have good pace, the JRFlyers iced the puck more times than they would’ve liked early on, and also were shorthanded twice. Just after the JRFlyers killed off their second penalty the Revolution still had pressure from it, and were able to get the puck by (G) Murch for the 1-0 lead and that was it for the 1st period. In the 2nd period the JRFlyers got on the board when Taylor sent a pass to Nilsson and he shot it by (G) Pelke to tie the game 1-1. Late in the period the JRFlyers had a 5-3 power play looking to take the lead. They were able to do so as Hinderliter sent the puck down low and the Dougherty sent to across to Kubara and he buried it for the 2-1 lead. In the 3rd period the JRFlyers increased their lead as Nilsson scored his second goal of the day and it was another power play goal making it 3-1. Revolution came back with chances but Murch and the defense held strong and the JRFlyers came out with the victory and a weekend sweep.

“I think we played well as a team, it was very important to come out play hard right off the bat…we came out, established our fore-check, and didn’t let them dictate the tempo and we took it to them. It was great to get four points against them.” Chris Butryn

Another standout award went to Goaltender Cody Murch. For the second time this season Murch was named one of the three Stars of the week by the Eastern Hockey League. Murch had both wins in goal for the JRFlyers stopping 68-72 shots in the two games against the Revolution.

Asst. Captain Tyler Williams has seen firsthand how well his goalie is playing out on the ice: “He’s making the saves that he has to make, and some that we think will go in but he makes the save anyway. He shows up ready to play every chance he gets, and he keeps making big stops for us.”

“It’s been easy to have success her so far, the defensemen do a great job keeping shots to the outside, and as I said before it’s nice to be recognized for your skill. More importantly to me was that we got two big wins against a division rival which is really big.” Cody Murch

This weekend the New York Applecore visits the Ice Line for a two game series. The Applecore come in with a 3-7 record and are on a 3 game losing streak. This could be a perfect time for the JRFlyers to establish a big win streak, and climb a few more points up the standings.
