Defenseman Jack O'Neil Gets Ready for Next Step in Hockey

In his second season with the team, defenseman Jack O’Neil has committed and will be playing DIII College Hockey next season. The 6’0 and ’96 birth year from Denver, Colorado is heading to Kings College in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.  In his second year with the JRFlyers O’Neil has become a staple in the defensive unit, bringing that steady defenseman aspect to the team. Kings College is part of the East Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC West) but is moving to the newly formed United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) next season.

It has been a successful two years for O’Neil as he shares about his time with the JRFlyers. “I have had a great time here. I think what has helped me out the most is the relationships I have built with my teammates. They helped me out in tough times and I’m thankful that, and I'm thankful that I get to work with these guys. We have great facilities and we can get ice time pretty much any time you want. I have definitely learned and improved on my foot speed. Coach Jason (Kilcoyne) always told me I was fast but I didn't use it to me advantage, so I've focused on that and have seen the difference in my game.”

Kings College is the next phase of hockey for O’Neil, while attending he plans on majoring in Business Management. He also has set a goal: “My primary goal is to be in the lineup as an everyday player. I want to do what I can and contribute defensively and offensively and help my team succeed.”

As he prepares for College Hockey O’Neil wanted to thank those who have helped along the way. “I’d like to thank Coach Jason (Kilcoyne) for helping me and getting the college stuff running in the beginning of the season. I want to thank Coach Domish for contacting schools as well and also helping me as a player. To my parents and friends back home thank you for all the support you have given me. I’m thankful for my teammates and they’ve made this year really fun, thanks for sticking with me.”

Coach Domish has seen O’Neil’s game progress in his time with the JRFlyers and is excited for his next step in hockey. “He struggled a little bit when he first got here last season in the beginning of the year. I think it was more in his head than anything else. This season he has overcome that and is playing with positivity and confidence. His shot has improved a lot; he's a very good skater and a solid defenseman. He’s definitely as asset to a team.”

Congratulations Jack on a successful junior hockey career. Your hard work is appreciated and the JRFlyers are thankful for your dedication. From all of us here with the JRFlyers, we wish you the best and you’ll always be part of the JRFlyers family.
