The Squirt Major (‘08’s) team finished the season with a big win on Saturday by defeating the Valley Forge Minutemen 3 – 1. It was the first time all year that the ‘08’s had beaten the Minutemen.

Jake Kanzinger got the ‘08’s on the board first mid-way through the opening period. Kanzinger hit the back of the net after receiving a backhanded pass from JD Frick.

Valley Forge would knot the score at one with time running down in first.

The second period was a battle until blueliner Jackson Lamb stepped up on a rush with the puck and got a low shot off on net that was deflected out-in-front by Bradan Fisher and past the Valley Forge goalie to give the ‘08’s a 2 – 1 lead.

As the third period began, the Minutemen tried to mount a furious comeback by attacking hard, moving the puck well and getting quality shots on the ‘08’s goalie Riley Doyle. But the boys stepped up and finished strong doing what the coaches asked of them. After a timeout with thirty-nine seconds remaining, Frick scored an empty net goal to give the ‘08’s a 3 – 1 win to close out the season. It was a tough and gritty group of players who finished the season on a high note.

The Jr. Flyers Squirt Majors traveled to Buffalo, NY last weekend to play in the North American Cup Challenge. The ‘08’s final game last Sunday was against the Mid-Fairfield Rangers, who are ranked as the number one team in the country. Oh, and they happened to be coached by National Hockey League Hall of Famer Marty St. Louis. Although they fielded a team with only seven skaters and two goalies, the ‘08’s played a hard-fought game.

Despite the loss, St. Louis came into the Jr. Flyers locker room to express how impressed he was with the team’s effort and grit, despite fielding a less-then full team.

Although Mid-Fairfield won the tournament, the ‘08’s showed that with a full squad next season that they will be a tough team to beat at the Pee Wee Minor level.
