JRFlyers Blue Liner Heading To College Hockey

Defenseman Evan Williams has committed to play college hockey next season. The JRFlyers blue liner will play collegiate hockey at Stevenson University in Maryland.  Williams is from Selinsgrove PA and a ’95 birth year. He was five years old when he started playing hockey and he has played on various teams. He started with the Hershey Jr Bears and played for a season with them, and then he came to the JRFlyers organization and played here for a few years growing up. Williams played his high school hockey at Millbrook Prep in New York, and then his final stop for juniors was back with the JRFlyers. This is his second season with the team and he talks about his time here: “What helped me the most is realizing how to play the game a different way. Jerry taught us to not use all of our energy, and to think more throughout the game.  I was working hard but not thinking through the game like I should’ve and he's helped in that aspect. Ben Weston (Asst Coach) really helped solidify my defensive game this season as well, and helped me figure out better ways to help the team.”

Next season Williams will play at Stevenson University. While there he will be studying math and physics and then wants to continue to get his masters in engineering. Next season will be the inaugural season for Stevenson Hockey and he gave us his thoughts about it: “Since it’s a new program I look forward to growing with the team. I want to go there in hopes of building something special with a team that is just starting out.

Collegiate hockey is next but Williams had one final message to his team. “I just want to thank all of my teammates for being there for me; they were like family to me at this point. They are some of the best friends I could ever ask for, and I’d like to keep in touch with them and see how they're doing next year whether they’re playing at college or back here. I also want to thank the JRFlyers organization for helping me get to where I want to be through my two seasons here.”

Coach Domish is excited for Williams and here's what he had to say about his defenseman: “I’m really happy for Evan. When he came from Millbrook before he got here and he was a pretty decent defenseman, but needed to be refined. He’s made the adjustments and is a much better skater now and he makes good decisions on the ice. He also has some decent offensive skills that he didn’t have in the beginning. I think it’s a good opportunity for the team and for him. It’s brand new, and he has the chance to put his mark on the program from day one, and he’ll have the opportunity to play every day.”

Congratulations Evan, we are proud of you and very grateful for all of your hard work and dedication that you displayed while you were a JRFlyer. Best of luck as you continue your hockey journey.
